Deb Shieh works

Graphic Designer

& ramen connoisseur

American filmmaker Doug Liman once said, “Almost anything can be justified as a style of filmmaking if it works.” I was introduced to films at a very young age when my parents took me to see the animated production of The Lion King. My young mind was blown as quickly as a fresh bag of Hot Cheetos in the hands of a sleep-deprived ArtCenter student when the opening of “Circle of Life” engulfed the theater. Drama, colors, and music filled me with emotion from Simba’s regal birth to his dramatic reclamation of Pride Rock. It did not take long for me to connect a variety of cinematic components that came together to create a magical experience.
Growing up with a repertoire of films in my memory bank, I have found my attachment to cinema culture to be a source of inspiration for my design approach and interest in storytelling. From the visual tones and sequential pacing to the spirit of collaboration we see in films, graphic design also embodies these vehicles that transport viewers to emotional experiences that connect them to a message. Whether it’s in transmedia branding, print, packaging, or an interactive installation, all of these media types carry the capability to evoke memorable experiences—convictions I like to bring to my creative process.
