This project allowed me to exercise my skills in academic research and apply them to design in a meaningful way that extended beyond print media. Throughout its literary history, wuxia (martial arts fiction) was adapted to fit contemporary narratives and propaganda, most notably when it was used by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) during Mao’s rise to power. Socio-political turmoil swelled during the Chinese Civil War and drove filmmakers from Shanghai, where wuxia was censored and eventually banned, to Hong Kong and Taiwan where they flourished and fearlessly depicted the perseverance of heroes overcoming tyranny, a reflection of the struggles that contributed to the diaspora of Chinese people from their homeland. What began as a routine term project evolved into a love letter to my parents and Taiwanese-American cultural heritage. <img width="4899" height="3266" width_o="4899" height_o="3266" continues the narrative in The East Runs Red beyond print design. The dual timelines provide visual information of major events in modern China and its juxtaposition to notable wuxia and kung fu film releases provide users to draw causal–correlation connections between the two. This rebrand brings into focus the essence of filmmaking with graphic elements inspired by the slate board and script, as well as LA's vibrantly unapologetic attitude that attracts aspiring filmmakers to the city. I chose to hypothetically rebrand LA Shorts for my interest in cinema culture and opportunity for me to explore the short film format. Camera! Party! It’s not a Hollywood party without a celebration! To kick off the annual festival, I created a hypothetical pool party that would take place at the historic Roosevelt Hotel Pool as an extension to the LA Shorts brand. With code and sensors, festival attendees would approach a barcode of colors, which would part to reveal the trailers and showtimes of a featured short film. Because the hotel consists of eight themed tiny houses—Arthur Boxcar, Cabin, Beach House, Gypsy Wagon, Bamboo House, Cottage, Barn House, and Modern House—the challenge is to collectively tease out However, its figurative meaning for death and mortality is universal and relatable. The idea and visual representation of vanitas rose to prominence in 18th- and 19th-century Dutch still-life paintings in which fruits, luxury food items, and floral arrangements were depicted on canvases encased in gilded, ornate frames. While these visually opulent paintings celebrated life, they served as grim reminders to the viewer that the vanities we hold dear in our lives are transient, temporary. The chapters of the book are grouped into three parts, each exploring mortality in arrangements, raw materials, and time. The dual cups link handle to handle and its forms are inverses of each other, providing a visual analogy to the opposites of attraction. Like most couplings, the ability to compromise is essential to a healthy relationship. Thus, the single spoon encourages users to learn to share. The cups fit snuggly onto a tray—a comfortable “home” for the cups. A third section of the tray dips to provide a platter for mildly delicious snacks, like a few Hot Cheetos, or sugar cubes for those who like it sweet. First modeled from sketches into SolidWorks, cups and tray were each designed by different tools of production. The tops of the cups were 3D printed in starch, which was later hardened, sanded, primed, and spray painted with Tamiya Color to mimic a smooth, matte ceramic surface. The bottoms of the cups comprise cork material that was cut from a yoga block by a CNC (computer numerical control) mill that controlled the movement of the mechanical drill, as was the pine tray. Each poster was printed with the Vandercook No. 4 proofing press on Mohawk’s premium eggshell white paperstock.
